Learning French with Derech Hasafa
French is one of the world’s most important languages. It developed from Latin of the Middle Ages, spoken in the territories of the Roman Empire. In the late Middle Ages, when Paris became a political and cultural centre, the local language became officially French.
As French colonialism expanded, French gradually became spoken in more and more countries. Today, 230 million people speak it and for about 110 million people is a mother tongue. French is an official international language and as such, is used for administrative business in many international organizations such as the European league and the United Nations.
Israelis have always felt a close attachment to French music and art and are familiar with French contemporary culture. The music of The Companion De La Chanson, Charles Asnavour, Jack Brel, and many others has always been well loved in Israel. French movies are highly regarded and French literature (Sartre, Camus, De Beauvoir and others) has been translated and well read.
Our private teachers in Derech Hasafa will give you a basis in French or strengthen what you already know. It will be great to enter a restaurant in Provence and order a meal in French, to listen to Georges Brassens (not that the Yossi Banay translation is not good…) or watch a Godard film without translation.
Born in Paris, France, Joëlle made Aliyah on January 2006 and lives in Nachlaot, Jerusalem. She studied copy editing in Paris and works for various French and Israeli publishers and writers. She started French teaching in 2007 with private students, with whom she has discovered an ability to help finding a specific way to learn the language for each one, that she will summarize in three words: regularity, spontaneity and self-confidence. Joëlle is also a wine lover.
